Designers Talk, Her Looks

Designers Talk – Nikhil Thampi

March 11, 2018

Despite having a slight fever and feeling pretty unwell, Nikhil Thampi showed up right on time for the meet and greet and styling session at The Deccan Story in Jubilee Hills. Simple and down-to-earth, he was simply excited at the way his new collection had been showcased at the store.

With no formal training in fashion, he has indeed come a long way from his debut at Lakme Fashion Week and styling numerous A-list celebrities. After chatting with him for a bit, you realise that sometimes hard work and passion can get you places that you never dreamed of. You don’t really need to ‘fit in’ with the rest of the crowd, and sometimes that can be a really good thing.

A psychology graduate, who joined his family business of aviation soon decided that, that was not his calling. A creative at heart, he found his way into fashion after helping a close friend who was participating in LFW with her work. While he is very much the introvert and not very expressive, his clothes have a language, a personality of their own.

Within six years a brand had been built.

The lack of a technical background means that there are no rules to his game, and he could break & make rules according to what he believed instead of blindly following what the fashion world told him to do. But at the same time he agrees that he needs to technically advance himself, and study more to keep up with this industry where there’s something new each day.

His latest collection Quantum, has a mix of both Indian and Western wear. You can see at first glance that silhouettes and metal chips are the focus of this brilliant collection.

I had a chance to pick and style my favourites from the collection, take a look!
